This year, the Eddie Aiku Invitational is staged as â€œEddie Aikau 2009 Showcase a Big Waves in Hawaii Coastâ€. Many surfers and surf watchers deluged the north and west shores of Oahu and Maui for the annual Eddie Aikau Invitational. Surf fanatics may have witnessed the biggest waves in 40 years. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave International at Waimea Bay incidentally is celebrating its 25th year.
It was forecasted last Sunday that waves may reach 30 to 40 feet high by Monday and even go as high as 50 feet in the outer reefs around the north and west shores of Oahu, Maui and Molokai. In this regard the lifeguard tower at Baldwin Beach in Paia has been moved beyond inland by the Maui Country officials.
