Based on the NHL Heritage Classic 2011 latest updates the game itself is set for February 20, 2011 at about 4:00 p.m. MST. This is also the second outdoor game of the current National Hockey League season, the first being the Winter Classic which is another crowd drawer. Part of the weekend festivities includes the Abbotsford Heat hosting the Oklahoma City Barons at the Scotiabank Saddledome. An alumni game is likewise part of the schedule wherein former players of the Flames and the Canadiens will battle it out on the ice. In a Western Hockey League game of the Classic, the Calgary Hitmen will go face to face with the Regina Pats on the 21st of February.
The National Hockey League hopes to generate more support and interest in the regular annual event. The league revealed that there are plans to play regular season outdoor games in Canada beginning next hockey season as per the NHL Heritage Classic 2011 latest updates. This plan though will still be discussed with the Competition Committee in June to ensure that everything will be in place and all eventualities will be taken cared of. The scheduled games for this season will be telecast by Versus to the United States audience. In case the plans will be approved by the committee, it will mark the first time in the history of the National Hockey League regular season wherein a game will be played outdoors within the boundaries of Canada. The last time this happened was when the Canadiens were hosted by the Edmonton Oilers on November 22, 2003 for the first Heritage Classic. The event was held at the Commonwealth Stadium.
