If you had wished sometimes in the past for the ground to swallow you up, now is the time to hope that your wish will not be granted anytime soon because the thought of literally disappearing down a deep hole could possibly happen.
A 65-year old woman got the shock of her life when she found a huge sinkhole under her bed in her home at Guatemala City. The sinkhole measures at 12m deep and 80cm in diameter.
Inocenta Hernandez, the woman who discovered the sinkhole, couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the sinkhole. “When we heard the loud boom we thought a gas canister from a neighboring home had exploded, or there had been a crash on the street,†she said. “We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed.”
Underneath the City of Guatemala are volcanic deposits and the city is really prone to sinkholes. Back in 2007, a 150m deep sinkhole swallowed a number of homes including a truck and left three people dead. Another sinkhole measuring 20m wide and about 30m deep that swallowed a three-story building plus a house was also found within the same area in 2010.
