Esperanza Spalding – The Jazzer and Blueser

Esperanza Spalding was born in 1984. She is from Portland, Oregon where she started to play in jazz and blues venues at an early age. She was already 14 years old when she learned acoustic bass and that’s when she helped form the eclectic band Noise for Pretend.

This band combines jazz and pop and Esperanza would then sing and play bass for them. As a group, they were able to sign with Hush Records and had two albums under their name. Both albums have their original compositions. As Esperanza Spalding broadens her career, she would play with other jazz groups and at the same time she would lead her own trio and septet. Her latest performance was at the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo City Hall. She was personally handpicked by U.S. President Barack Obama.
